This is not an easy decision for us, but we just can’t get him to settle down and with 3 children, we fear an unwanted incident with their friends. We want to ensure he is going to good home that will care for him, and want to be completely up front on all his nuances. We had a previous Shiba for 12 years before this one, so we are very familiar with the behavior of the breed.
Our Shiba Inu (Max) has allergies (resulting in excessive scratching) and has recently been allergy tested and began daily treatments of oral allergy medication several weeks ago. The vet has not been able to completely determine the reason for the scratching. If the symptoms persist, he may require a vet to oversee his treatment in an ongoing basis. We can provide further information regarding the allergy treatment he is currently on.
He has not been around many other dogs while in our home, so we cannot speak to his temperament with other animals. He definitely prefers to be inside, not outside, although we have a fenced yard he has access too. We would not recommend he be in a household with children or that will have young visitors as sudden sounds and motion tend to get him very worked up. He is OK with our children, but as stated above, he doesn’t understand welcomed guests and his ‘mouthy’ tendencies can result in unwanted results, especially for children.
